Abstract
This study seeks to identify factors affecting urban and rural residents' trust of central and local governments in authoritarian China. The party-state has applied strategies to increase its legitimacy, which in turn have increased urban and rural residents' trust of the government. Specifically, China's party-state strategy to strengthen its legitimacy and psychological factors at the individual level, such as regional differences between rural and urban areas, evaluation of government performance, authoritarianism and nationalists' tendencies, and China's international involvement, affect trust in the government. Using the fourth dataset of the Asia Barometer Survey, this study applies logistic regression analysis and finds that central and local government performance and perceptions of corruption are related to trust in the government. In addition, conventionalism or authoritarian tendencies that value group interests influence the trust of both the central and the local governments. However, in controlling the government's performance and authoritarian tendencies, China's international role in intervention was limited in terms of influencing local government trust. Finally, in China, rural residents tend to trust the central government, while urban residents tend to trust local governments.
