Abstract

The upheavals of the late Qing and Republican era shook the very foundations of Confucianism and presented intellectuals with the urgent task of envisioning a new civilizational order. This paper turns attention to Zhang Ertian (張爾田), a figure who has received relatively little scholarly notice in this process. Although often regarded as a mere “remnant subject of the Qing” (清末遺老), Zhang was in fact an enlightened conservative who, while safeguarding tradition, sought to reconstruct Confucianism under modern conditions. Diagnosing the root cause of social disorder as the “absence of a morality commonly observed,” he emphasized the interconnection of religion, culture, and morality as the path to overcoming it. He defined Confucianism as a “religion of preserving the race” (保種之宗敎), thereby assigning it the mission of national survival; he understood “culture” as civilization, a synthesis of politics, religion, and ethics; and he maintained that even under the republican system, real problems could be resolved according to the principle of shizhong (時中, “timely appropriateness”). Moreover, on the premise that every social order requires a “center,” he perceived both democracy and communism as nothing more than new forms of monarchy. By positioning the sage as the agent of moral transformation and intellectuals as mediators connecting ruler and people, he sought simultaneously to restructure national order and redefine the status of the intellectual. Although Zhang’s vision failed to yield visible results in the face of contemporary radical currents, it nevertheless reveals another dimension of modern Chinese intellectual history: an attempt to explore new possibilities for Confucianism by traversing tradition and modernity, politics and morality, scholarship and religion. By analyzing Zhang Ertian’s civilizational vision and political practice, this paper seeks to reexamine the ideological orientation of an enlightened conservative hitherto marginalized in scholarship, and to clarify the historical context and significance of the reinterpretation of Confucianism.
