Abstract
The “Debate on Science and Metaphysics (Philosophy of Life),” initiated by Zhang Junmai’s (1886–1969) lecture in 1923, continued for over a year with the participation of many intellectuals. The debate articles were later compiled and published in two volumes, which allow us to trace the flow and landscape of contemporary intellectual discourse. Since the late Qing period, with the introduction of Western modern learning, science had been widely regarded as a crucial tool for strengthening the nation, and an active reception of scientific knowledge led to the emergence of a “scientific omnipotence” doctrine. Against this backdrop—particularly as science gained prominence during the New Culture Movement—Zhang Junmai launched a critique of scientism through his discourse on the philosophy of life. The debate has generally been understood as resulting in the victory of the “science camp,” which further facilitated the spread of scientism(唯科学主义) and promoted the diffusion of scientific materialism. Examining the background and content of this debate in relation to the construction of a modern knowledge system reveals its deeper implications. The metaphysics camp’s critique of modernity was, in fact, embedded within the very process of establishing a modern knowledge structure. Their theoretical justification for separating science from philosophy in the educational system led—not to a division between science and religion, as in the West—but to a structural separation of science from morality and ethics in China. Consequently, science clarified its own identity and consolidated its disciplinary autonomy. Ultimately, the debate contributed to the establishment of an educational and academic order based on the separation of scientific and moral-ethical domains, exerting a significant influence on the formation of the modern dichotomy between the sciences and the humanities in China.
