Abstract
This study focuses on Yasujiro Ozu"s “Hen in the Wind” within the framework of Japan"s wartime and postwar context. The official postwar period of Japan refers to the time after August 15, 1945. However, discourse on the postwar cannot be simply concluded by a specific date. Demonstrating the complexity of such postwar nuances, Ozu, having been demobilized in Singapore in July 1939 during the pre-war period, was re-enlisted in the military propaganda film unit in June 1943, experienced defeat in Singapore, and returned home in February 1946 after being held in a prisoner-of-war camp. His subsequent works, “Record of a Tenement Gentleman” (1947) and “Hen in the Wind” (1948), are classified as pivotal points in Ozu"s filmography, representing the most ‘Japanese’ aspects. While “Record of a Tenement Gentleman” can be seen as an extension of Ozu"s typical Shitamachi (downtown) genre, “Hen in the Wind” remains the subject of debate regarding its critical stance towards the realities of the wartime and postwar periods, regardless of geographical boundaries. “Hen in the Wind” depicts the aftermath of the war in Tokyo immediately after the defeat, where not all soldiers have returned home and families in the rear have no news of when their husbands/sons/fathers will return. Therefore, debates surrounding “Hen in the Wind” start with anyone expressing their own perspective on the ‘postwar’ period. However, could this debate have become one-sided due to the differing perspectives on the postwar period held by individual viewers? This study sets out from the divergent perspectives surrounding “Hen in the Wind” to establish common ground between the Amamiya couple, thereby examining the plot and the short structure that bestow legitimacy upon the postwar and wartime. Through this, an attempt is made to delve into the lingering traces of war and imperialism present therein.
