Abstract

This study examines the experience of shame associated with mothering within Korean society from a sociocultural perspective and explores pastoral counseling approaches for its healing. While existing studies have predominantly understood the negative emotions mothers experience toward their children as guilt, this study identifies shame an emotion fundamentally connected to one's identity and existence as the core affect underlying these experiences. Specifically, the shame experienced by Korean mothers demonstrates distinct characteristics when compared to the guilt commonly reported by Western mothers, reflecting the unique sociocultural dynamics of Korean society. As shame is both a personal emotion and a socially constructed affect, it is essential to analyze maternal shame within its sociocultural context. Accordingly, this study examines two primary sociocultural factors contributing to maternal shame in Korea: first, the pervasive maternal ideology that idealizes and prescribes specific norms for mothers; and second, the increasing prevalence of 'mom-hate' discourse in contemporary Korean society. Based on this, the study proposes pastoral counseling approaches for healing the shame experienced during mothering by reinterpreting motherhood through the pastoral counseling models of inter-subjective motherhood and communal motherhood.
