Abstract
The European Parliament elections held in June led to lots of discussions on various aspects. The focus was on whether European integration would be reversed due to the rise of the extreme right, or whether stability could be restored by gaining momentum despite the difficulties posed by the complex crisis. The election results did not show as much growth of the far-right as expected, and although there was turmoil, including the defeat of the ruling forces in Germany and France, the existing ruling groups in Europe still held the majority. This situation should be a boon for Italy, where the ruling forces won a clear victory, but given that the extreme right forces are the mainstay, it has resulted in an ideological differentiation from the leading forces at the European level. The key was whether Meloni's forces would still join von der Reyen's bid for the election of the president of the European Commission, joining the active unity movement. Eventually, the Green Left expressed its support, and the far right voted against it, ostensibly with a negative outcome for Italy. But Meloni has vowed that Italy will remain selectively pro-choice as European executive implements business-friendly policies and takes into account the right's stance on immigration. Against these backdrops, the situation supports cautious optimism that centripetal forces toward integration may be at work. Of course, depending on the outcome of the US presidential election or the handling of the war in Ukraine, the fate of Europe is expected to be significantly affected. In addition, the question remains whether Europe, which is experiencing a relative decline in the US-China strategic competition, will be able to maintain its economic interests.
