Abstract

This article examines the implications of the "Brussels Effect" by analyzing the EU's competition law and General Data Protection Regulation, and evaluates whether European regulatory policies have the potential to serve as a means of achieving international dominance in the future. The Brussels effect refers to the EU's unilateral control over markets all over the world, requiring companies to follow EU regulations to trade in the EU. The EU's rules has been imposed globally, and have a far-reaching impact on people around the world. This concept builds upon the existing discourse on European normative power, but expands to encompass a more comprehensive view of the forces at play in markets globally. The EU establishes normative hegemony through the threat of exclusion from the European market, rather than through coercion or domination. Despite this, the EU's current regulatory authority has faced various forms of resistance, and there are concerns that the Brussels Effect may not guarantee the EU's dominance. In the context of the declining liberal market order, it is necessary to reassess each regulatory domain and individual case to determine if the Brussels Effect can continue to be effective.
