선의지는 개별 의도인가 성격인가 - 『도덕형이상학 정초』를 중심으로

본 논문에서 나는 선의지에 관한 개별 의도 해석을 반박하고 성격 해석을 옹호함으로써 『정초』 1절의 논의에서 선의지 개념이 차지하는 자리를 밝히고자 하였다. 결론은 보편화가능한 원칙을 자기 행위의 준칙의 원리로 삼겠다는 행위자의 의지의 성격이 선의지라는 것이다. 선의지가 행위 시에 발휘되는 개별 의도라는 해석은 선의지라는 요소가 왜 다른 정신 능력 요소들과 비교해 특별한 가치를 갖는지를 설명하지 못한다는 점에서 선의지를 무제한적인 가치를 설명하지 못한다. 반면, 선의지를 선한 원칙을 채택하는 행위자의 의지의 성격으로 해석하면, 행위의 도덕적 가치의 원천을 설명하며, 이로부터 개별 행위와 이를 실행하는 행위자가 채택한 원칙을 분리하여 고찰할 여지가 생긴다. 의무로부터의 행위의 도덕적 가치는 선의지의 무제한적 가치로부터 나오지만, 선의지를 가진 행위자가 언제나 의무 동기에 따라 행위하도록 보장하는 것은 아니다. 인간 의지는 언제나 자신이 채택한 선한 의지를 개별 행위에서 관철하기 위한 투쟁 중에 있는 것이다.
Abstract
I would clarify the position of concept of good will in the discussion in Section 1 of Groundwork by refuting the particular intention interpretation and advocating for the character interpretation of good will. The conclusion is that good will is the character of an agent's will to adopt the principle that his maxim of action is ruled by a universalizable principle. The interpretation that good will is a particular intention exercised in each action cannot explain the unlimited value of good will in that it does not explain why good will as an element has such a special value compared to other elements of mental abilities. On the other hand, interpreting good will as the character of the agent's will to adopt good principles explains the source of the moral value of an action, and from this, there is room for separate consideration of a particular action and the agent’s principle of action. The moral value of an action from duty comes from the unlimited value of good will, but it does not guarantee that a person of good will would always act from duty. Human will is always in the midst of a struggle to realize the good will one has adopted by doing particular actions.
