칸트가 『윤리형이상학』에서 제시하는 도덕적 강함은 칸트 덕개념의 최종적인 정의이자 그의 덕론의 중심적인 정의이다. 도덕적 강함은 형식적 덕과 실질적 덕 둘 모두에 해당함으로써 형식적 덕에 해당하는 도덕적 마음씨보다 경험적 적합성을 확보하는데 상대적으로 유리한 덕개념이다. 이 점은 성격과 행위 간의 불일치 문제와 덕의 통일성 문제에서 확인된다. 내용에 있어서 도덕적 강함은 법칙을 실행하려는 숙고된 확고한 결의로서 법칙을 최상의 근거로 삼는 도덕적 준칙을 선택하는 것이다. 준칙의 선택에 있어서의 강함은 도덕적 결의를 하고 이를 고수하는 것을 의미하며 이때 선택되는 준칙은 행위의 궁극적 의도로서의 동기를 포함하는 목적의 준칙이다. 또한 주관적으로 보면 도덕적 강함은 도덕적 무정념을 전제로 자기지배에 이르는 능력이며 이러한 자기지배는 도덕적 감정이라는 실행적 권위를 포함한다는 점에서 정서적 측면을 갖는다. 도덕적 강함으로서의 덕에서 감정이 덕의 일부라고 주장하는 것은 도덕적 감정의 작용을 본체적 의지결정의 현상적 표명일 뿐이라고 간주하고 정서적 측면의 도덕적 가치를 인정하지 않는다는 점에서 칸트윤리학을 특징짓는 주요 입장들에 위배되지 않는다.
Abstract
Moral strength, which Kant presents in his doctrine of virtue, is the main and final definition of Kant's concept of virtue. In contrast to moral disposition corresponding to intelligible character, moral strength is the concept of virtue that is relatively favorable to ensuring empirical adequacy because it is involved in an empirical character as well as an intelligible character. This is revealed in the problem of the inconsistency between character and action and the problem of the unity of virtue. Moral strength in content is a deliberate and firm resolution to fulfill the law and a power to choose the moral maxim that takes the law as an ultimate motive. Strength in the choice of a maxim means making a moral resolution and then sticking to it, and the chosen maxim is the maxim of ends which includes the motive as an ultimate intention. Subjectively, moral strength is the ability to achieve the self-mastery which presupposes moral apathy. Moral strength as the self-mastery has an affective aspect in that it involves the executive authority of moral feelings. The claim that feelings are part of the virtue as moral strength does not conflict with the main positions that characterize Kant’s ethics, such as the transcendental idealism and the good will as an unconditional good, in that it regards the operation of moral feelings as merely a phenomenal expression of determining the noumenal will and also does not recognize the moral value of the affective aspect.
