This study investigates the emotional control that the The North Korean authorities implemented over their people in the early days of the Kim Jong-il regime. The study was based on 57 articles on the first page of Rodong Sinmun searched under the title ‘Kim Il-sung’ and ‘Supreme Leader’ from Jul. 8, 1994, when Kim Il-sung died, to Sep. 5, 1998, when the first constitutional amendment was made during the Kim Jong-il period. All the emotions identified as toward Kim Il-sung were conveyed to Kim Jong-il in order to justify and stabilize the new regime. The North Korean authorities used emotional control to make the Kim Jong-il regime legitimate and maintain social solidarity.
