Suicide, the act of killing oneself, has been a controversial subject from the ancient time to the present. While most understandings of suicide have negative attitudes toward it, existential philosophy suggests that we can approach a recondite meaning of human beings by understanding suicides. According to Karl Jaspers and Jean Améry, some kinds of suicides seem to have no clear reasons and beyond our understanding. They argue that those suicides deserve to be discussed in that the logic of life could be severe violent and aggressive for certain human beings when it forces them to obey blindly. Their interpretation on suicide enables us to listen to hidden voices of those who want to kill themselves without any clear reason. Based on the concepts Jaspers suggests such as “unconditional act” and “existential shame”, this paper delves into the meaning of existential suicide, especially the meaning of holocaust survivor’s suicide represented in the film, Sophie’s Choice.
