This article addresses the history and current status of loanwords integrated into the Korean language, the definitions of terms relating to loanwords, and the patterns of response to such loanwords. Up until the enlightenment period, the majority of borrowings into Korean came from the Chinese language and after the same period, many words were borrowed from the Japanese and Western languages—especially English. The terms used in relation to loanwords(외래어) include borrowings(차용어), foreign words(외국어), and adopted words(귀화어). While ‘loanwords’ and ‘foreign words’ are used separately, some argue that the two words should not be used separately. ‘Borrowings’ and ‘loanwords’ are also differently defined, depending on the perspective of a scholar. With regard to the acceptance of loanwords, there have been two patterns of response in the Korean language, which are orthographic unification and the refinement of loanwords. To avoid confusion in orthography, there are orthographic rules for loanwords and the government has collaborated with the press to review the orthography of loanwords. The refinement of the Korean language began after Korea gained its independence from Japanese rule, and continues to this day, particularly with the participation of ordinary citizens on the internet.
