초록

This study is about Chinese phonetic loans. It mainly consists of three topics as follows: 1. what Chinese phonetic loans are and how they can be classified, 2. how Chinese phonetic loans affect the Chinese language, and 3. how the Chinese society and culture are reflected in Chinese phonetic loans. To be more specific, phonetic loans are transcriptions of foreign sounds. There are four types of Chinese phonetic loans which are pure phonetic loans, phonetic loans considering the meaning of Chinese characters, loans made up of phonetic loans and Chinese morphemes, and lastly, loans half made up of phonetic loans and half made up of semantic loans. These phonetic loans significantly influence the Chinese language. They primarily play a role in filling the empty lexical space in Chinese language by providing many concepts which had not existed in China. In addition, as a new morpheme, Chinese phonetic loans can be used to create many new Chinese words, and the meanings of Chinese phonetic loans are often extended. However, Chinese phonetic loans sometimes cause confusion in Chinese language usage since there are many variations of Chinese phonetic loans for the same foreign words. Through the formation of Chinese phonetic loans, people can see the fast change of the Chinese society, the language habit or the aesthetic sense of Chinese people, and the Chinese traditional culture.
