Abstract
Korean and Japanese picture brides who immigrated to the West Coast during the Japanese colonial era are lacking in active research on them, despite their contributions to establishing the cornerstone of the community. Korean and Japanese picture brides have not been comprehensively studied even though they provide examples that are rare in American immigration history. In previous studies, fragmentary studies on the data on the picture bride were conducted, and little academic comparative analysis was conducted. In this study, first, I looked at what kind of environment Korean and Japanese picture brides had to adapt to after entering the United States. Second, I reviewed how they adapted to the given environment. And I compared and considered what roles were given to them. Finally, the differences between the characteristics and dilemmas they experienced during the adaptation process were compared and analyzed in detail.
