Abstract

This study aims to compare the macro and micro aspects of social structure and culture among Korea, China and Japan. For this purpose, it examined the affective characteristics of occupation that can play an important role in the formation of social structure and show the cultural characteristics of society itself. Especially, it examined the micro aspects of occupational prestige as the concept of social identity and examine the similarities and differences among the three countries. Its results can be roughly classified into the followings. First, despite the similarity of the occupational hierarchy structure of the three countries, there is a slight difference in specific areas. The biggest difference is that there is a larger difference in occupational prestige in Korea compared to China and Japan. Second, the dimensions of affective evaluation of occupation are similar. Important dimensions include intimacy, accountability, power, and activity is used as an important factor in evaluating occupations in Korea, China and Japan. However, the comparative importance of the evaluation dimension is somewhat different. Activity dimension is used more widely used in Korea. Third, the affective meaning explains considerable amount of occupational prestige in all three countries.
