이 연구는 마스크 착용을 비롯한 사회적 거리두기의 실천들이 증여에 값한다는 아이디어에서 출발한다. 거리두기를 실천할 때 사람들은 코로나-주지-않기라는 선물을서로에게 준다. 논문은 증여와 사회/공동체의 관계라는 익숙한 사회인류학적 테마를 코로나19의 창궐에 의해 자극된 사회/공동체의 운동이라는 문제의식으로 변주하면서 크게 두 가지 방향의 논의를 전개한다. 첫째, 바이러스 확산에 책임이 있는 것으로 간주되는 이들을 향한 혐오의 커뮤니케이션을 매개로 코로나-주지-않기라는 선물을 일반화시키는 공동체의 도덕적 자가면역 과정이 검토된다. 둘째, ‘이름의 경제’라는 관점 아래 코로나19의 자극이 국민이라는 이름의 역량 강화로 귀결되는 과정을 분석하면서 주권적 명명이라는 문제의식을 제안한다. 전쟁 프레임이 범유행의 상황에 도입된 결과 사람들은 적에-맞서-선물하는-국민으로 명명되게 되는바, 본 연구는 코로나19 범유행을 국민의 이름(名)이 이끄는 삶(生)을 육성하는 근대적 ‘생명정치’가 예외적 강도로 전개되는 시간으로 파악한다.
Abstract
This article examines the series of events triggered by the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic from the perspective of the development of the biopolitics that fosters a life based on the name of the nation. The idea behind the whole discussion is that the acts involved in not spreading the virus, including wearing a mask, can be considered gift-giving. By transforming the familiar socio-anthropological theme of the relationship between gift-giving and society/community into a problem of the society/community’s movement stimulated by the outbreak of COVID-19, the author analyzes this movement in two sections: (1) as an autoimmune process of the community that elicits the moral practice of gift-giving and (2) as a process of the activation of society or “economy of the name” by facilitating observations based on the nation/enemy distinction. In addition, a brief reflection on the nature of the sovereignty of the nation-state implied by the widespread use of the metaphor of war against the COVID-19 pandemic is introduced.
