이 글의 목적은 모리스 고들리에가 그의 저서 『증여의 수수께끼』에서 보여준 몇 가지 테마들을 통해 증여 행위에 내재된 집단적 기만이 지니는 사회적 의미들을 밝히는 데 있다. 고들리에의 논의를 따라, 우리는 왜 양도할 수 없으며 교환 불가능한 신성재로부터 증여의 집단적 기만이 기인하는가를 살펴보고, 이 기만에 의해 은폐된 위계적 사회관계의 자의성을 폭로하는 비판적 사회과학의 의의를 검토할 것이다. 먼저 이 글은 양도 불가능한 신성재의 존재 이유를 파악하기 위해 고들리에가 어떤 방식으로 모스의 증여-교환 개념과 레비스트로스의 상징적 교환 개념을 반박하는지 살펴본다. 둘째, 마르크스의 소외와 물신 개념에 근거해 신성재의 지배 근거를 해명하는 고들리에의 논의를 검토한다. 셋째, 비판적 사회과학의 주된 기능을 신성재의 거짓 환상을 고발하는 데 두는 고들리에의 관점을 살펴보고, 현대 사회에서 드러나는 옛 신성재의 등가물이 어떻게 새로운 양도 불가능성을 생산하는지 탐색한다. 마지막으로 인간 사회 속에서 증여 도덕의 ‘집단적 기만’을 완전히 제거할 수 없다는 문제를 제기함으로써 고들리에의 비판적 사회과학이 지니는 한계를 지적하기로 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to clarify the social meanings of the collective deception inherent in gift giving through exploring several themes suggested by Maurice Godelier in his book The Enigma of the Gift. Following his argument, this article examines the reason why the collective deception of gift results from the sacred objects inalienable and unexchangeable, and reviews the function of critical social sciences which aim to expose the arbitrariness of hierarchical social relations concealed by this deception. For this purpose, first of all, we examine how Godelier refutes Mauss’s notion of gift-exchange and Lévi- Strauss’s concept of symbolic exchange in order to analyze sociologically the raison d’etre of the sacred objects inalienable. Secondly, we explore Godelier’s arguments which analyze grounds for domination of sacred objets in human society on the basis of Marx’s alienation and fetishism. Thirdly, we discuss the function of critical social sciences which, in Godelier’s view, disclose the false illusion produced by sacred objets, and explore how equivalents of ancient sacred objets constitute an new inalienability in our society. Through analyzing these characteristics of Godelier’s interpretation of gift and sacred objets, this article finally tries to point out theoretical limitations inherent in Godelier’s arguments by bringing into relief a problem of impossibility to eliminate the collective deception of gift morality in human society completely.
