Abstract
This study aims to empirically analyze the changes in Korea's export competitiveness to Chile and its structural determinants, marking the 20th anniversary of the Korea-Chile Free Trade Agreement(FTA). Focusing on Constant Market Share(CMS) analysis, the study disaggregates the effects of import demand, product composition, and competitiveness in the Chilean market. It also incorporates Market Comparative Advantage(MCA) and the Index of Competitive Threat(ICT) to provide a multidimensional assessment of competitiveness trends. The analysis reveals that although Korea's exports to Chile surged immediately after the FTA due to tariff reductions, its market share has steadily declined since the 2010s due to the rise of competitors such as China and the United States, as well as structural shifts in the market. While automobiles and certain industrial intermediate goods maintained comparative advantages, sectors such as electronics and textiles lost ground in terms of technology and price competitiveness. ICT analysis indicates that competition has intensified to its highest levels in recent years, signaling that Korea’s exports face structural limitations. This study concludes that Korea's declining export competitiveness in Chile stems from long-term structural changes rather than short-term shocks and highlights the need for strategic policy responses and modernization of the FTA to revitalize export performance.
