후안 마드리드의 토니 로마노 시리즈는 스페인 노벨라 네그라를 대표하는 장수 시리즈로, 초기에는 사회의 부정부패를 고발하는 데 초점을 맞췄으나 후반부로 갈수록 등장인물들의 개인적 서사를 강조하며 서사적 깊이를 확장했다. 특히 토니 로마노, 후안 델포로, 실베리오의 캐릭터 변화는 범죄 해결을 넘어 사회적, 가족적, 개인적 갈등을 탐구하며 본격소설로 발전할 가능성을 보여준다. 또한, 롤랑 바르트와 유태영의 ‘좋은 소설’ 개념을 바탕으로 분석한 결과, 이 시리즈는 단순한 장르 소설을 넘어 문학적 가치를 지닌 작품으로 평가될 수 있다. 본 연구는 등장인물 분석을 중심으로 토니 로마노 시리즈의 서사화 가능성을 탐구함으로써 노벨라 네그라의 경계를 확장하고 장르 소설이 본격소설로 발전할 가능성을 조명하고자 한다.
Abstract
Juan Madrid’s Toni Romano Series, a long-running work of Spanish novela negra, begins by exposing social corruption but later emphasizes character-driven narratives, deepening its thematic complexity. The character development of Toni Romano, Juan Delforo, and Silverio moves beyond crime-solving to explore social and personal conflicts, suggesting the series’ potential to evolve into serious literature. Drawing on Roland Barthes and Yu Tae-young’s concepts of ‘good literature’, this study highlights the series’ literary value and its potential to expand the boundaries of genre fiction into serious literature through character analysis.
