Abstract
Generally, the Spanish pseudo-partitive construction [un poco de NP] denotes a small amount, but in some regions of Hispanic America, it is used to mean ‘a small amount’ in written language but ‘a large amount’ in spoken language, thus exhibiting semantic ambiguity. To avoid this semantic ambiguity, Guatemalan, Costa Rican, Colombian and Venezuelan Spanish speaker use augmentatives such as [un pocote de NP] to express the meaning of ‘large amount’ and diminutives such as [un poquito de NP] to express ‘small amount’. This phenomenon reflects Venezuelan speakers’ intuitive judgment that the nominal base poco does not carry a quantificational meaning. Building on this observation, the present study considers the root √poc- as a polarity-triggering element unrelated to quantification and argues that so-called appreciative affixes play a crucial role in the degree interpretation of ‘large amount’ and ‘small amount’.
