Abstract

In Modern Spanish it is not recommended to use the expression ‘muy mucho’ in spite of its wide use in colloquial contexts(cf. (Gutiérrez Rodríguez 2006). Real Academia Española(2009) recognizes that the expression ‘muy mucho’ was widely used in Old Spanish and even in Modern Spanish it can be found in various contexts. In this article we would like to show that the adverb mucho does not have a quantity meaning(cf. (Solt(2010)) when it is used as a degree adverb in the inherent quantification for gradable predicates(cf. Bosque & Masullo(1998)). Based on this perspective we continue to show that the derivation of the expression ‘muy mucho’ is closely related to the diachronic evidence(cf. Pastor 2008) and the morphological merger mechanism(cf. (Sáez 2017)).
