Abstract

This study, from a variationist sociolinguistic perspective, analyzes the patterns of variation in the deletion of final /s/ in the Spanish spoken in the central Andean region of Peru. Since coda /s/ can serve grammatical functions when it appears in word-final position, this context represents an intersection between phonology and grammar. According to the functional hypothesis proposed by Kiparsky, linguistic elements that carry relevant information tend to be preserved in speech and should not be omitted. However, in Spanish, final /s/ may be deleted not only when it is part of the lexical item but also when it performs important grammatical functions. This phenomenon can be attributed to the redundancy inherent in Spanish grammar. Therefore, redundancy can be considered a significant variable in the deletion of final /s/. Likewise, the following phonological environment may influence the occurrence of such deletion. In addition, differences may arise due to the various social backgrounds of the speakers. In this study, the program Goldvarb X was used to analyze the influence of several variables, such as grammatical redundancy, following context, number of syllables in the word, gender, age, and educational level. The results show that most of the independent variables are statistically significant. Among them, internal linguistic factors—particularly grammatical redundancy and the phonological context—proved to have especially strong effects. Furthermore, it was found that in the Spanish of this region, the likelihood of final /s/ deletion is higher in the speech of younger speakers, speakers with only primary education, and male speakers.
