이 연구는 맞벌이 가구의 남편의 존재형태, 역할 책임의 유형, 가사 참여 정도 등을 심층면접 자료를 통해 분석하고 있다. 연구 시기는 산업화 이후 여성의 취업 확대와 성별 분업 규범의 변화 양상에 따라 90년대 이전과 이후 두 시기로 구분하여 변화를 살펴보았다. 전통적 성별분업 규범이 아직 견고하던 90년대 이전, 맞벌이 가구 남편은 생계부양 역할 여부와 상관없이 가정 내에서 권위적인 위치에 있었고, 가사분담의 책임에서도 벗어나 있었다. 또한 하층 맞벌이 가구의 경우 남편의 생계부양 역할은 잦은 이직, 부채 등으로 지속적인 취업을 하고 있는 부인에 비해 불안정한 생계부양자인 경우가 많았다. 90년대 이후 신전통적 성별분업 시기의 남편들은 부인의 취업을 당연시하고 인정하게 되나, 가사분담의 양상은 여전히 불균등하다. 취업 여성들은 남편에 대해 공평한 가사분담을 요구하기 보다는 부모의 지원을 통해 가사노동을 대체하거나 최소화하는 전략을 사용한다. 그러나 이전 시기 취약한 생계부양 역할을 해도 가정 내 남편의 권위가 유지되었다면, 90년대 이후에는 훨씬 불안정해지고 인정받지 못하는 존재가 된다. 즉, 가정 내 성별분업의 불평등한 관계의 지속과 남성 부양자 권위의 흔들림과 균열이 동시에 나타나고 있는 것이다.
Abstract
This paper analyzed husbands’ attitudes of employed women to the breadwinning role, domestic work, and the sexual division of labor in dual-earner families from the 1960’s Korean industrialization to present. This period is subdivided into two phases as follows. The first phase, 1960-1990, was characterized by the rigid sexual division of labor, negative attitudes towards women’s employment, and strong authority in financial decision-making belonging to husbands. Many husbands earned less than their wife in low strata families. But they did not perform any domestic work and they kept their authority concerning financial and family decision-making. The second phase, 1990-present, is characterized by positive attitudes towards women’s employment and the weakening of authority of husbands concerning financial decision-making. But there still remained an unequal sharing of domestic work. So the sexual division of labor is the only area where attitudes remained unchanged.
