Abstract
As an investigation for the shift of gender relation in neo-liberal global capitalist society, this paper analyzes the change of male breadwinner family model in Korea. In the article published in 1994, Nancy Fraser predicted the end of family wage and decline of male breadwinner family norm in postindustrial society. Examining this trend in Urban Household Survey(1993-2013) data, we find the fact that men’s income still occupy 74.6% percent of household income in Korean family, though dual earners family has increased over the past 20 years. As married women’s employment has centered on middle-aged and older groups, it tends to be limited to low-wage occupations. Thus the result is the continuation of male breadwinner family in Korean society. This brings about an ironical situation like men’s criticism against the male breadwinner family model. Due to the instability of employment, men have realized practical inadequacy of male breadwinner family model. Focusing on men’s experiences of baby boomer generation, this paper is exploring the crack of male breadwinner ethic and its implication in imbalanced gender relation in Korean family.
