Abstract

This study investigates the way in which gender differences affect organizational social network compositions, using social network theory to examine networks of employees. Empirical research was carried out on 1,200 employees in various organizations. The results of the study are as follows. First, the tendency for gender homophily among respondents and advisors in friendship and task-advice networks was higher for male employees than for female employees. Second, there was no statistically significant relationship between friendship networks and task-advice networks, though there was a higher network overlap among males in terms of age, education level, and job level. Finally, this study finds that there are systematic gender differences in the composition of social networks. These differences are related the systematic and structural disadvantages within organizations that female employees face when it comes to promotion, compensation, and mistreatment, and lead female employees to develop their own strategies to compose social networks.
