Abstract
The question of identifying the origins of democracy in Korea, represents a complex and sensitive issue that reflects not only, differing perspectives on the meaning of democracy, but also, divergent positions on the historical identity and legitimacy of the, Republic of Korea. A striking feature of existing scholarly discussions, on this topic, however, is the conspicuous absence of any serious, consideration of ‘women’s problem’. Although women’s equal, entitlement to freedom and rights as citizens is integral to defining, what democracy is and ought to be, the discord between the, formation of South Korea’s democracy and ‘women’s liberation’ has, drawn little attention. This study arises from such a lacuna, and, aims to critically illuminate the origins of Korean democracy from, gender perspectives, thereby expanding our understanding of its, historical trajectory and contemporary predicament. Specifically, by, focusing on the discourse of ‘equal rights for men and women’ that, emerged in the late nineteenth century and its institutionalization in, the process of establishing the government, as well as on the land, reform implemented by Syngman Rhee’s government, it explores, the background and process in which Korea’s nascent democracy took shape as a ‘democracy without gender’ or a ‘democracy with a, male face’.
