Abstract

This study set out to review research trends based on Personal Diaries. For this purpose, the investigator generally reviewed the research trends by period, research outcomes by topic, and research trends by type of journal. In the former half of the 1990s, journals were established as part of journal literature and used as materials for individual research in the field of historical studies. In 1996, there was the first focus on the value of journals as materials with journals settling down as journal-type materials for the first time through discussions about the concept and classification method of journals. Based on this, the research areas have recently become segmented with journals classified by content into exile, travel, and appeal journals and classified by the region into Honam and Yeongnam journals. A look at the research trends by period shows huge changes in the value of Personal Diaries over the last 20 years. There were also diverse and profound discussions in the aspect of research topics. There were efforts to review again the classification criteria of journals including the subjects of recording, the perspectives of recording, and styles based on the concept and classification method. The gist is that journals should be defined, classified, and understood from the viewpoint of Joseon people. These discussions have huge implications for the future concepts and classifications of journals. The investigator also examined research trends by the type of journal and found that a lot of previous research made use of life journals, life in government office, and travel records, in that order. There was tremendous growth both in quantity and quality of research based on journals over the last 20 years.
