Abstract

This study examined the overview and value of 562 diaries by period in Honam Literary Collection Archive. The Honam Literary Collection Archive diaries were confirmed to consist of 5 in 14th~15th centuries, 75 in the 16th century, 57 in the 17th century, 57 in the 18th century, 172 in the 19th century, and 196 in the 20th century. Honam Literary Collection Archive diaries emerged in the 14th~15th centuries, spreading the tradition of writing diaries somewhat, and peaking in the second half of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century. Thereafter, in line with the times changes and the mixture writing involving Chinese characters and Korean letters, the tradition disappeared in the second half of the 20th century. That is what this study confirmed. The 562 diaries were classified by content into: 40 about daily routines, 41 about pursuits of study, 33 about the performance of official jobs, 320 about travel, 10 about envoy, 7 about exiles, 48 about wars, 9 about civil soldiers, 31 about incidents, and 22 about funerals. The largest portion is about travels, accounting for 56% of the total volume. Diaries about travels had a limitation on the length associated with itineraries, and made it easy to compile them due to the completion of writing. This study constitutes the first survey and summarization of Honam Literary Collection Archive diaries. The value of the Honam Literary Collection Archive diaries was found in that they can contribute to securing Korea’s historical diaries, can identify the change process of diaries written using Chinese characters, can provide the base for the total survey of Honam region’s historical diarie, and can provide data closely related to the Honam region.
