Abstract
This study examines how Yi Hwang’s disciples and later Confucian scholars in Joseon Korea conceptualized, inherited, and restructured the diagrammatic representations (yeokdoxang, 易圖象) of the Book of Changes (易經). Toegye expanded the horizon of symbolic-numerical (象數) thought through his Explanatory Notes to the Enlightenment of the Study of Change(啓蒙傳疑), which supplemented annotations to Enlightenment to the Study of Change(易學啓蒙). This paper analyzes how Toegye’s diagrammatic philosophy was developed by Ryu Seong-ryong and materialized in Gwon Gang’s Yeok Doseol(易圖說) and Kim Chi-gwan’s Yeok Doseo(易圖書). Gwon Gang’s Yeok Doseol faithfully inherits the structure and diagrams of Enlightenment to the Study of Change(易學啓蒙), while addressing gaps in previous scholarship and attempting a reinterpretation of the sangsuhak tradition. Kim Chi-gwan’s Yeok Doseo, comprising 24 diagrams, visualizes a wide range of theoretical elements—including the Hetu(河圖), Luoshu(洛書), Eight Trigrams, Sixty-Four Hexagrams, Yin-Yang and Five Elements, musical pitch standards(律呂), calendar systems, and even moral psychology—thus offering a comprehensive visual reconstruction of Yeok(易) thought. Post-Toegye research on the Diagrams of the Book of Changes uses Enlightenment to the Study of Change(易學啓蒙), as a starting point to recontextualize and visualize diverse Yeok(易) theories within a philosophical framework. Ryu Seong-ryong, inheriting Toegye’s teachings, focused on the Hetu and Luoshu, expanding their interpretive range through intellectual exchanges with scholars such as Ryu Bin and Jang Hyeon-gwang. This diagrammatic worldview deeply influenced Gwon Gang and Kim Chi-gwan, who not only inherited and systematized the insights of Yi Hwang and Jang Hyeon-gwang but also enriched the diagrammatic tradition by incorporating broader theoretical frameworks, thereby deepening the visual philosophy of Yeok(易) studies in late Joseon.
