Regional Economic Exchange and Development Strategy in China and Taiwan: The Cases of Xiamen and Kinmen

This study tries to explore the regional economic development strategy in Mainland China and Taiwan. It is focusing on Xiamen area in Mainland China and Kinmen area in Taiwan. Firstly, Kinmen area is longing for economic exchange and cooperation with Xiamen area, because it is an underdeveloped area that is far from Mainland Taiwan, but Xiamen area is close to it and maintains the same socio-culture with it. On the other hand, Xiamen area regards the economic exchange and cooperation with Kinmen area as an alternative plan that can settle its structural economic problems. Secondly, Taiwan Government supports the economic exchange and cooperation between Kinmen area and Xiamen area, but is afraid that they will function as the pressures of political integration and unification between Taiwan and Mainland China. On the other hand, Mainland China Government hopes that they will bring about social integration between both areas and furthermore become a bridgehead for the political integration between Mainland China and Taiwan. Thirdly, the “Kinmen-Xiamen economic zone” plan by Kinmen area mainly concentrates its attention on the economic cooperation and integration, but “Xiamen-Kinmen economic zone” plan by Xiamen area includes the social integration transcending economic cooperation and integration between both areas.
Abstract
