Abstract

In his latest paper, which attempts to provide a theoretical basis to basic income, Ahn takes the Korean controversy on information goods as his analytical starting point. In particular, he adopts what he calls the balanced approach, criticizing the multiplication approach in two respects. First, he argues that the multiplication approach ignores the specificity of information goods, requiring no direct labour in the production process. Second, he argues that the rigorous distinction between commodity and knowledge in the multiplication approach is unnecessary. This paper defends the multiplication approach. As to the first point, it is demonstrated that commodity production does not necessarily require direct labor with outsourcing being a typical example. Therefore, no special theory for information goods is argued to be necessary. The second point is refuted on the ground that significant theoretical difficulties and contradictions necessarily arise when knowledge is viewed as the same as a commodity.
