Abstract

Although Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri’s Empire is widely received as a ‘Communist Manifesto in the 21st Century’ by many left commenta- tors, I will argue that Empire has no place in the tradition of classical Marxism. Empire is nothing less than a reformulation of globaloney, worded à la post-structuralist discourses. Hardt and Negri reject Marxian theories of value and crisis, alleging that the coming of the service economy and IT revolution made them irrelevant. Empire espouses a Kautskyist theory of ultra-imperialism, rejecting Leninist theory of imperialist rivalry and ‘weakest link.’ Empire even denies the facts of hegemonic power of the US imperialism in the current world affairs as well as the increasing economic polarization between the First World and the Third World. Empire also celebrates the so-called nomadism of the ‘multitude’ as favored strategy to fight with empire, while rejecting the centrality of organized workers’ movement. The reformist essence of Empire is clearly revealed when Hardt and Negri support the Clintonian multilateral ‘aristocracy’ in opposition to the Neocon’s unilateral ‘monarchy’.
