Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to provide an assessment of the nature of neo-liberal globalization by a critical review of Empire, a highly praised new book by Negri and Hardt. The paper argues that Empire are based on four basic assumptions. Firstly, empire and neo-liberal globalizations are inevita- ble. Secondly, they are desirable. Thirdly, therefore, anti-globalization strug- gles are reactionary. Fourthly, our alternative is not to resist neo-liberal globalization by capital, but to accelerate it, and thereby create counter-glo- balization. This article shows that in spite of many critical contributions, these assumptions are tainted with overgeneralizations of reality, Eurocen- tralism and ‘left idealism.’
