Abstract
This paper provides a critical account of Louis Althusser’s theory of aesthetics and ideology. In “The Piccolo Teatro: Bertolazzi and Brecht”,Althusser proposes a materialist theory of theatre turning to what Brecht terms Verfremdungseffekt. He also proposes the production of a new spectator/subjectivity as the core mechanism of theatrical work, which distinguishes Althusser from Brecht, who grasped the recognition of the real as the core function of theatre. What is at issue with Althusser’s new formulation of the dynamic of theatre is how to articulate ‘distantiation’, which aims to uncover the real causes of social phenomena, and the production of a new subjectivity, which seems to run counter to what distantiation intends to achieve. This paper attempts to resolve this problem by turning to Spinoza’s theory of affections and Althusser’s own theorization of ideology.
