Abstract
What I want to show in this paper is that Louis Althusser’s concept of symptomatic reading is a much more profoundly Spinozistic concept than it appears on the surface. However, this aspect has not been properly paid attention to until today, which not only makes it difficult to accurately understand the theoretical project of Reading Capital, but also makes it difficult to fully grasp the philosophical implications of the concept of symptomatic reading. When read from a Spinozist perspective, it becomes clearer that the concept of symptomatic reading that Althusser proposes in Reading Capital is one that contains a series of contradictions, ambiguities, and gaps, and therefore requires another symptomatic readings. Conversely, the Spinozism that Althusser utilized in his own way in relation to the concept of symptomatic reading provides an opportunity to shed new light on Spinoza’s philosophy, which is the point I want to show in this paper. I will argue this, focusing especially on the relationship between Spinoza’s concept of causa sui and the concept of structural causality.
