구조인과성의 변증법의 가능성과 한계* - 스피노자와 헤겔 사이에서

알튀세르(Louis Althusser)는 『『자본』을 읽자(Lire le capital)』에서 스피노자(Benedict de Spinoza)의 이론에 의지해서 사회와 역사 영역에 적합한 과학적 인과성 개념으로 구조인과성(structural causality, la causalité structurelle) 개념을 가공한다. 그러나 이는 많은 이론적 난점을 지니고 있었다. 특히 모순을 바탕으로 구성되는 이론인 변증법을 긍정성/실정정을 바탕으로 하는 스피노자의 이론으로 재구성하고 해체하는 작업은 이론적 갈등을 초래했다. 결국 알튀세르는 스피노자의 이론을 통한 역사유물론 개조 작업을 이론주의로 비판하고 헤겔(G. W. F. Hegel)의 변증법으로 회귀한다. 알튀세르는 스피노자와 헤겔 사이에서 나타나는 변증법의 이론적 문제를 적합하게 해결하지 못한 것이다. 하지만 두 이론가 사이에 절충의 지점이 완전히 부재한다고 말할 수는 없다. 스피노자의 이론에 내재하는 관계(relations) 및 내재적 인과성(immanent causality)이 모순 자체를 완전히 배제하는 것은 아니며 헤겔의 부정성(negativity) 개념도 주체 없는 과정(process without a subject or a goal)의 요소를 지니고 있다. 따라서 이 글에서는 마슈레(Pierre Macherey)와 바스카(Roy Bhaskar)의 스피노자·헤겔 해석을 참조하며 알튀세르의 이론 속에 내재하는 이론적 갈등을 조명하고, 스피노자와 헤겔의 변증법이 수렴할 수 있는 이론적 조건에 대해서 논의할 것이다. 이를 위해 이 글에서는 마슈레의 해석을 바탕으로 스피노자의 실체·속성·양태 개념에서 드러나는 이론적 난점들을 분석하고 이를 바탕으로 그의 이론을 변증법적으로 독해할 가능성을 모색할 것이다. 나아가 이를 바스카의 부재화(absenting of constraints on absenting absences or ills)로서 변증법 이론과 비교한 후, 관계의 존재론(ontology of relations)의 관점에서 이 두 이론이 수렴할 수 있는 가능성에 대해 논의할 것이다. 궁극적으로 이 글은 헤겔 대 스피노자라는 쟁점을 되살리며 ‘구조인과성’을 재평가하고. 비목적론적 변증법의 구성을 위한 이론적 조건들을 고찰하는 것을 목표로 한다.
Abstract
In Reading Capital (Lire le capital), Louis Althusser attempted to construct the notion of structural causality (la causalité structurelle) based upon Benedict de Spinoza's theory of substance, which was aimed to capture the originality of the conception of historical/social causality posited by Karl Marx and to pose historical materialism as a rigorous science. The point was to change/translate G. W. F. Hegel's dialectic into a non-teleological one, i.e., the dialectic of a process without a subject or a goal. However, this resulted in some theoretical problems in that Spinoza's theory of the positive was incompatible with the Hegelian dialectic, which was based upon the notion of contradiction. Thus Althusser returned to the Hegel's dialectic, criticizing that his own project of reconstructing Marxism was a theoreticism. However, Althusser failed to understand a certain dialectic working in Spinoza's work: contradictions are at work in Spinoza' theoretical system of substance, though differently from that of Hegel. Therefore, I will attempt to find a different form of dialectic in Spinoza's work based on Pierre Macherey's reading of Spinoza's dialectic and explore the possibility to find the point of convergence between Spinoza and Hegel with reference to the notion of relations (determination by relations): the conception of relations implied by Marx's and Spinoza's work creates some theoretical space where positivity and negativity can stay together without negating each other, and in turn provides a theoretical platform on which to construct a non-teleological dialectic.
