Abstract
This paper analyzes Marx and Engels’ works and Das Kapital published in North Korea. First, this paper divides the reception of Marx and Engels’s works in North Korea into four periods, examining the major works and their characteristics. 1) The period from 1945 to 1953, following the establishment of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Korean War. 2) The period from 1954 to 1960, during the period of ‘transformation toward socialism.’ 3) The period from 1961 to 1967, during the period of ‘comprehensive socialist construction.’ 4) The period after 1967, when Juche idea gained prominence. Meanwhile, this paper analyzes the North Korean edition of Das Kapital and examines the academic value of the Baekui Publishing Company edition of Das Kapital in South Korea. The characteristics of the North Korean edition analyzed in this paper are as follows: 1) The 1955~59 edition of Das Kapital was the first complete translation in both North and South Korea. 2) The later edition of Das Kapital appears to have been published after revising the 1955~59 edition of Das Kapital. 3) The Baekui Publishing Company edition of Das Kapital lacks academic value, considering the use of other sources and editorial revisions. This paper attempts to fill the gap in the North Korean translation of Marx and Engels’ works, of which only the published contents of some works are known.
