이 글은 마르크스의 Das Kapital이 최근 우리말로 새롭게 완역 출판된 것을 계기로Das Kapital의 성격 및 그것의 번역과 관련된 몇 가지 이슈들을 고찰한다. 또한 이는이 새로운 『자본』(강신준 옮김, 길, 2008-10)의 서평을 겸한다. 옮긴이에 따르면 이번 판본의 가장 중요한 의의는 그것이 ‘원전 번역’이라는 것인데, 실제 번역과 관련된 주요한 사항들을 살펴본 뒤 이 글은 이번 판본에서 ‘원전 번역’의 묘가 만족스러운 수준으로 살아나지는 않았다고 주장할 것이다. 다음으로 우리는 이번 길판의 성격을 규정하는 데 결코 작지 않은 역할을 하는 옮긴이 자신의 「해제」를 검토한 뒤,그것이 독자들의 『자본』 이해를 돕기보다는 어떤 점에서는 심각하게 방해함을 보일 것이다. 끝으로 우리는 번역 대본의 선택은 적절했는지를 살펴봄으로써, 『자본』에서 ‘원전’ 또는 ‘정본’의 의미가 무엇인지를 물을 것이다. 이를 통해 우리는, 마르크스의 경제이론에 대한 연구의 최근 성과들로 미뤄봤을 때 Das Kapital을 이해하는방식이 ― 그 ‘해석’의 다양성과는 별도로 ― 복합적으로 될 필요가 있음을 주장할것이다.
Abstract
This paper considers some essential aspects of Karl Marx’s Das Kapital, and a few issues concerning its translation into another language; in doing so, it also reviews the new Korean edition of this important work made available recently. Unlike the translator’s claim that his is the first Korean edition that is scientifically meaningful since it is virtually the first translation from the original German, it will be argued here that, upon close examination, it hardly deserves such a qualification. Then, the translator’s own ‘Introduction’, crucial in determining the way the new edition is received, is to be scrutinised, based upon which it will be shown the ‘Introduction’ will impede, rather than facilitate the reader’s understanding of Das Kapital. Lastly, by looking into the suitability of the choice of the edition of the original text, we will question the meaning of the ‘original’ for Das Kapital, and suggest that the recent scientific developments made around Das Kapital have rendered it necessary to conceive it in a more complex way than before.
