박상태는 근대전환기라고 통칭하는 19세기 강우지역에서 지역 사족으로서의 삶을 살았던 인물이다. 그가 활동했던 시기는 만성 박치복‧단계 김인섭‧후산 허유‧물천 김진호 등 이 지역의 많은 굵직한 인물들이 굴기하던 때이다. 박상태는 그들과의 교유를 통해 학문을 논하고 시국을 토론하며 강학 활동을 하였다. 그는 같은 마을의 김인섭의 소개로 성재 허전의 문하에 나아가 그에게 집지하였다. 이때는 허전이 김해 부사를 마치고 한양에 거주하던 때로, 원거리를 오가며 학문적인 지도를 받는다는 것은 많은 현실적인 문제가 발생하는 일이었다. 그러나 그는 爲己之學의 도를 전수받은 제자로서의 예를 다하고, 스승의 문집을 간행하는 일까지 주간하였다. 허전을 스승의 예로 모시는 한편 박상태는 한주 이진상의 ‘心卽理說’에 깊이 침잠하여 공부하고 ‘道’의 요체가 여기에 있다고 인식하였다. 이진상뿐만 아니라 사미헌 장복추, 만성 박치복 등 그는 선유들과 교유하며 학문적 자장을 넓혔다.
Abstract
Park Sang-tae (鶴山 朴尙台) was a figure who lived as a local sajok (literati class) in the Gang-u region (western Gyeongsang-do) during the 19th century, a period commonly referred to as the modern transition era. He was active during a time when many prominent figures of the region, such as Park Chi-bok (Manseong), Kim In-seop (Dangye), Heo Yu (Husan), and Kim Jin-ho (Mulcheon), were rising to prominence. Through his interactions with them, Park Sang-tae engaged in scholarly discussions, debated the state of national affairs, and conducted academic activities. Through the introduction of Kim In-seop, who lived in the same village, he entered the school of Heo Jeon (Seongjae) and formally became his disciple. At that time, Heo Jeon was residing in Hanyang after completing his term as the magistrate of Gimhae; thus, receiving academic guidance while traveling such a long distance presented many practical difficulties. Nevertheless, as a disciple who inherited the Way of Wigi-ji-hak (learning for the sake of one’s self), he fulfilled his duties with utmost respect and even supervised the publication of his master’s literary collection. While honoring Heo Jeon as his teacher, Park Sang-tae also immersed himself deeply in the Sim-jeuk-ri (Mind is Principle) theory of Lee Jin-sang (Hanju), recognizing it as the core essence of the Do (the Way). In addition to Lee Jin-sang, he expanded his academic horizons by interacting with other leading scholars such as Jang Bok-chu (Samiheon) and Park Chi-bok (Manseong).
