미래시(將來時) ‘要’ 試探－양태와 미래의 문법화 경로를 중심으로－

이 논문은 양태와 미래의 관계를 중심으로 다양한 양태 기능을 나타내는 조동사 ‘要’의 미래시제 표지로의 발전에 대해 살펴본다. 조동사 ‘要’는 양태와 미래의 복합적인 의미를 나타내므로 선행 연구에서는 양태의 범주나 미래의 범주에서 설명한다. 본고는 미래시제 범주는 양태의 범위를 벗어난 것으로 보고, 현대중국어의 ‘要’는 미래 시간 지시 기능을 바탕으로 미래시제 기능을 가지게 되었으며, 최소한 시제 범주의 문법화 단계에 근접했음을 주장한다. 언어보편적으로 미래시제의 발전은 ‘의도 → 의도+예측 → 예측 → 시간 지시 기능’이라는 문법화 경로를 따른다. 중국어의 ‘要’ 역시 이러한 경로를 따라 시간 지시의 기능을 나타내는 미래시제 표지로 발전하고 있으며, 이때 ‘要’의 근원 의미로부터 발전한 의도 및 예측의 의미가 중요하게 작용한다. 이에 따라 공시적으로 유사한 양태 의미를 나타내는 ‘會’나 ‘得’이 미래시제 표지로 발전하지 못한 원인에 대해서도 살펴본다. ‘會’는 가능성의 의미를 바탕으로 미래 상황을 예측하는 의미로 발전하였으나, 완전한 시간 지시의 의미를 나타내는 단계까지는 이르지 못하였다. ‘得’의 경우 의도와 예측의 의미가 복합적으로 나타난다기보다는 각각 존재하며, 아직 미래시제로의 발전은 진행되고 있지 않다.
Abstract
In this study, we argue that the future tense category is beyond the scope of modality, and that ‘要’ in Modern Chinese has a future tense function based on the future time reference function and is at least close to the grammaticalization stage of the tense category. Cross-linguistically, the development of the future tense follows the grammaticalization path of ‘intention → intention+prediction → prediction → time reference function’. The development of ‘要’ in Chinese also follows this path, with the future tense marker indicating a time reference function, and we can see that the intention and prediction meanings that evolved from the root meaning of ‘要’ played an important role. We also examined why ‘會’ and ‘得’, which synchronically have similar modality meanings to ‘要’, did not develop into future tense markers. ‘會’ has developed into a meaning of predicting future situation based on the meaning of possibility, but it has not reached the stage of completely representing the meaning of time reference. In the case of ‘得’, the intention and prediction meanings are separate rather than combined, and the development into the future tense is not yet progressed.
