한국 특수교육에서의 질적 연구 동향과 발전 과제

한국 특수교육학계의 연구 패러다임은 양적 연구 시각에 의해 지배되어 왔다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 한국 특수교육 환경이 점차 변화되고 있는 실정을 고려할 때, 양적 연구 시각만으로 특수교육을 이해하는 데는 한계가 있음이 지적되어 왔다. 따라서 이 연구는 양적 연구 시각의 한계를 극복하고 특수교육 현상의 ‘있는 그대로’를 심도 있게 이해하기 위한 대안으로써 질적 연구 패러다임에 관심을 가지고 추진하였다. 이를 위하여 먼저, 논문 투고 편수의 경향성을 중심으로 진단해본 결과, 학술논문과 학위논문의 연구논리는 양적 연구방법론이 주류를 이루고 있는 것으로 파악되었다. 또한, 국외적으로는 특수교육관련 전문 학회와 단체가 중심이 되어 질적 연구방법론의 평가기준을 구체적으로 제시하고 있다는 것을 문헌연구를 통하여 파악할 수 있었다. 다음으로, 한국 특수교육학계에서의 질적 연구는 양적 연구의 한계를 극복함으로써 질적 연구의 확산 가능성을 확인하였고, 그 대안으로서 각각의 질적 연구방법론에 해당하는 질적 연구 아이디어, 질적 연구의 엄격성, 질적 연구 확산에 대한 재음미를 해 보았다. 마지막으로, 한국의 질적 연구 동향, 문헌 연구 등의 결과에 근거하여 한국 특수교육의 질적 연구 발전 과제를 다섯 가지로 제시하였다. 한국 특수교육의 발전 과제 다섯 가지는 ‘특수교육 연구 패러다임의 다양화’, ‘대학에서 가르칠 수 있는 인적 자원의 확대’, ‘양적 시각으로 질적 연구 보기에 대한 극복 노력’, ‘학문의 동반 발전을 위한 노력’, ‘특수교육 발전을 위한 국가적 지원 요청’이다. 여기서 제시한 한국 특수교육 질적 연구의 발전 과제는 단독으로 추진되기보다는 통합적으로 이루어질 때 그 효과는 배가될 것이다.
Abstract
Special education research in Korea has been dominated by quantitative methodology. Now that the circumstances of Korean special education are gradually changing, though, a research paradigm that focuses mainly on the quantitative aspect is not effective in understanding special education. This study examines the importance of qualitative study in Korean special education as a means to overcome the limitations of quantitative studies. First, this research shows that the majority of academic articles and degree theses mainly use quantitative methods. A literature review of overseas cases, however, tells us that there are a number of academic societies and special education institutions that suggest specific ways to adopt the qualitative methodology. Furthermore, the fundamental necessity of incorporating qualitative study in Korean special education research is confirmed by showing the limitations of the mathematical quantification method. Qualitative research ideas, the strict rules to follow in implementing a qualitative study and the five particular tasks for qualitative research on Korean special education are presented. The five tasks are ‘diversifying special education research paradigms', ‘increasing faculty members who can teach the qualitative methods in college', ‘overcoming the dependence of the quantitative methods for primarily qualitative issues', ‘seeking the development of both research styles', and ‘demanding more governmental support for special education research'. The tasks listed above can be fulfilled when all of them are processed simultaneously rather than when they are pursued separately.
