Abstract
This paper discusses a new trend of the transforming nation-states in the era of globalization with a new theoretical concept of network states. Facing the challenge of globalization, nation-states have lost a lot of their traditional authorities and functions, they have still transformed themselves and survived with domestic heterarchy, meta-governance and trans-governmental networks. We will get a better view about how the governance mechanisms work in a more efficient and more flexible form in this complex world politics. In particular, this paper takes attention to various experiments, such as open methods of coordination and heterarchy, that have been conducted in European Union as a real and pioneering archtype of network states. Looking through these real and theoretical considerations, the paper introduces the emerging trend of network states as a transformed states in globalization.
