Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The most important and difficult step in the spatial design process is recognized as the process of establishing and expressing the design concept. Therefore, many students have difficulty clearly understanding and establishing design concepts, which means that there is a lack of research and systematic teaching methods on the process of visualizing design concepts. As a way to complement these problems, we propose the use of concept models in the space design process. Specifically, we aim to verify a method of visualizing intangible design concepts into tangible space by utilizing the [CMS]model(Concept-Motive-Style) among concept models. To this end, concept models were taught through various space design studio classes, and ways to improve students' design abilities were sought by applying the [CMS]model to space design classes. (Method) This study examined the theory of design concepts and formative expressions in the spatial design process through literature review and examined prior research on formative education and concept models. And we conducted education by applying the concept model in various space design studio classes. Although the content of each class was different, students freely used the [CMS]model through assignments during the class. Additionally, a survey was conducted to evaluate the understanding of the design process and the usefulness of the concept model. The survey investigated the stages perceived as difficult in the spatial design process, the degree of difficulty in establishing and expressing the concept, the usefulness of the concept model, and a comparison before and after using the [CMS]model. (Results) The survey results showed that students found the process of establishing and expressing design concepts the most difficult, and that the use of concept models had a positive effect on improving their understanding of the design process and design capabilities. In particular, 97.8% of students responded that the [CMS]model was useful, which shows that design work can be carried out more clearly and systematically through the concept model. They also responded that utilizing the [CMS]model helped them gain a clear understanding of design, have a logical and systematic design process, make concept setting easier, improve concept visualization, and enhance communication skills. (Conclusions) This study presented a new educational method for the concept visualization process in spatial design education and demonstrated that the use of the [CMS]model was effective. Therefore, we believe that this study has contributed to supplementing the establishment and expression of design concepts more systematically and effectively, and we expect that it will have a positive impact on future design education. However, the [CMS]model is limited to the visualization process, so it has limitations in that additional research and supplementation are required for the entire design process.
