Abstract
(Background and Purpose) The limitations of the concept formulation stage of the traditional interior design process include dependence on the designer’s subjective experience, inefficiency, and the absence of a systematic methodology. These problems may be further amplified by recent unstructured uses of image-generating AI. This study proposes the [CMS] (Concept-Motive-Style) model as a cognitive and methodological framework that provides logical rigor to creative processes. This study aims to design an AI agent based on the [CMS] model and apply it to the interior design process. It also aims to expand the design methodology theoretically and study a new process model that supports systematicity and efficiency in practice. (Method) The study was conducted using the DSR (Design Science Research) methodology in four stages: problem definition, system design, case application, and evaluation. First, we identified problems with the existing design process and proposed a [CMS] model. Second, we developed an AI agent utilizing the Dify platform, encompassing the four-step modules of “concept definition, motif generation, style selection, and visualization.” Third, to verify the effectiveness of the system, we conducted experiments applying it to three case studies: a modern minimalist apartment, a biophilic café, and a collaborative startup office. Finally, we evaluated the usability with 30 undergraduate interior design students using mixed methods (quantitative surveys and open-ended qualitative questions) and analyzed the results using SPSS. (Results) The quantitative analysis revealed a high overall user satisfaction (M=4.43). Specifically, “contribution to process efficiency” (M=4.57) and “usefulness of motive extraction” (M=4.53) received the highest scores, indicating the effectiveness of the system in streamlining the design workflow and clarifying abstract ideas. However, “Satisfaction with visualization quality” (M=3.83) was rated relatively lower. Qualitative feedback confirmed that the agent’s systematic process reduced uncertainty and aided creative exploration, although the users pointed out limitations in the detail and controllability of the generated images. (Conclusions) This study demonstrates that [CMS] model-based AI agents can function as partners that collaborate with designers, rather than simply as tools. This agent simultaneously improves the process efficiency and creative exploration by structuring ambiguous early design stages. Notwithstanding limitations in visualization quality and challenges in strengthening interoperability with practical software, this study is significant in that it demonstrates the new potential of human-AI collaboration models. The study provides a theoretical and practical foundation for reconstructing creative practice in an age of digital transformation and redefining the role of designers from creators to “curators of choice.”
