Abstract

(Background and Purpose) This study redefines spatial welfare as an integrated paradigm that goes beyond improving the physical environment to include the formation of social networks and the cultivation of emotional belonging. Previous discussions on spatial welfare have been limited by an emphasis on physical conditions such as accessibility and safety, while non-physical elements like community activation and affective experiences have been relatively overlooked. Accordingly, this study conceptualizes spatial welfare in terms of three attributes—physical, social, and emotional—and analyzes how they interact to generate multi-layered social value. Furthermore, it seeks to move beyond theoretical discourse by exploring practical applications, thereby establishing spatial welfare as both an independent academic field and a practical strategic framework. (Method) The research reviewed domestic and international studies as well as interdisciplinary debates, examining related concepts often conflated with spatial welfare—social design, community design, universal design, and service design—to clarify its distinctiveness. Spatial welfare was then subdivided into physical, social, and emotional attributes, and their concrete modes of implementation and interaction were analyzed. In exploring applications, the study identified four types—living environment improvement, idle space activation, complex program, and mobile—and described how attributes operate and what considerations are required in each. To verify effectiveness and ensure sustainability, an evaluation framework was designed around three axes—effectiveness, sustainability, and scalability—and developed into detailed indicators presented in matrix form. (Results) The findings confirm that an integrative approach combining physical infrastructure, social networks, and affective experiences forms the core of spatial welfare. In particular, physical attributes are most critical in the living environment improvement type, social attributes are prioritized in the idle space activation type, and emotional attributes play a leading role in the mobile type, while a balanced orchestration of all attributes is required in the complex program type. Moreover, the study demonstrates that when attribute-based approaches and type-specific strategies are closely integrated, the effects of spatial welfare are maximized. The evaluation framework enables both quantitative and qualitative validation and an assessment of its broader social impact. (Conclusion) This research establishes spatial welfare as an integrated concept encompassing physical, social, and emotional attributes, distinguishing it from related concepts and presenting both an academic and practical framework that includes attribute-based applications and an evaluation matrix. It provides a foundation for spatial welfare to be realized not only in scholarly discourse but also in practical domains like housing, education, care, and public space, thereby promoting the integrative development of urban, architectural, and welfare policies. However, as this study focused on conceptual establishment and strategic framework design, further research with concrete case studies and quantitative analysis is required to refine and operationalize applicable models.
