Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The advent of modern urban environments has been driven by three major factors: rapid industrialization, economic growth, and population concentration. The resulting urban landscapes have become vast, characterized by large plots, blocks, and buildings that encroach upon pedestrian routes, thereby creating detours. The objective of this study is to propose methodologies for enhancing pedestrian connectivity. The study focuses on public pathways designated as “through routes” for pedestrians, facilitating their movement. Consequently, this study outlines its analytical trajectory through theoretical consideration of the current status of pedestrian pathways in Korea and abroad, as well as strategies for fostering pedestrian connectivity in urban centers. To analyze the factors that promote connectivity, previous studies and case studies were reviewed, and an evaluation model was developed based on the findings. (Method) The evaluation model defines relationships by classifying each type of transit-oriented linear public space into three area elements. Each area element is represented as a physical element in the adjacent zone, a cognitive element in the boundary zone, and an experiential element in the passage zone. The physical elements were categorized into two groups: physical permeability and visual permeability to network walking spaces. The cognitive elements were evaluated by improving the accessibility of walking through spatial cognition and guidance systems. Finally, experiential elements were evaluated in terms of reducing perceived distance and linking commercial districts by providing safe, comfortable spaces and a strong sense of place. The evaluation was conducted as a case study of a public space in New York City that is actively maintained and developed. (Results) The results of the case study indicated that physical and visual permeability were high in most areas. However, the elements of spatial connection, information systems, creating a comfortable walking environment, and providing place image were lacking in each case. This suggests that physical connectivity was provided by the pass-through path; however, ensuring safe and comfortable walking routes—not merely shortcuts—along with reducing perceived distance through experiential elements was deemed inadequate. (Conclusions) The proposed methodology delineates three sequential steps for each designated area, with the objective of establishing a pass-through linear public space. These steps encompass not only the incorporation of physical elements, but also the provision of guidance and wayfinding to delineate passable areas, aiming to activate walking as a means of addressing spatial disconnection. Additionally, the methodology incorporates experiential elements aimed at reducing perceived distance and thereby activating the space.
