Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Contemporary urban environments are increasingly defined by stressors such as noise, air pollution, and visual overload, which threaten overall quality of life. The Fourth Industrial Revolution and the COVID-19 pandemic have shifted social expectations for urban spaces from simple recovery to broader resilience. However, existing studies have largely remained at the level of macro theories and policies, with limited applicability to spatial design. This study aims to extend Aditi Nerurkar’s 5 Resets framework—originally a psychological model of resilience—into spatial design principles, thereby proposing strategies for enhancing resilience in contemporary urban environments. (Method) The research was conducted in five stages: literature review, strategy development, strategy systematization with framework establishment, case analysis, and results. First, resilience theories and the 5 Resets framework were reviewed to establish a theoretical basis for translating psychological mechanisms into design principles. Based on this, five categories and fifteen strategies were identified: Clarity (CL: intuitive circulation, visual simplification, communication of core values), Calm (CA: noise reduction, acoustic control, mitigation of visual pollution), Synchrony (SC: daylighting, circulation flow, integration with nature), Brain Rest (BR: reduction of overstimulation, immersion/recovery transitions, restorative views), and Self-Empowerment (SE: provision of control, self-expression, community engagement). Next, five large-scale urban cultural complexes developed after 2021 were selected, and both quantitative scoring and qualitative assessments were conducted using the proposed framework to examine how these strategies were applied. (Results) The analysis showed that Clarity (average score 20.7) and Brain Rest (19.7) received relatively higher evaluations. At the sub-strategy level, communicating core values (CL3), community engagement (SE3), circulation flow (SC2), integration with nature (SC3), and restorative views (BR3) were consistently observed across the cases. By contrast, Calm (16.7) received the lowest overall evaluation, with limitations identified in acoustic control (CA2) and mitigation of visual pollution (CA3). In addition, the provision of control (SE1) received the lowest scores in all cases, suggesting the need for stronger incorporation of user-centered environmental control mechanisms. (Conclusions) This study demonstrates that the 5 Resets framework, beyond its psychological origins, can serve as a practical framework of spatial design strategies for enhancing urban resilience. In the context of cities reshaped by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the COVID-19 pandemic, translating neuropsychological mechanisms of resilience into design strategies offers theoretical and practical implications. The findings suggest that the proposed framework may inform public design strategies and policies, while also contributing to future research by providing a stronger basis for theoretical development and practical application, including comparative analysis and empirical validation in diverse urban contexts.
