Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Amid the accelerating pace of urbanization, psychological stress has emerged as one of the most significant public health challenges in modern society. High-density urban environments and the constant overload of sensory and informational stimuli can lead to chronic stress, disrupting both emotional regulation and neural balance. While numerous studies have confirmed the restorative and psychological benefits of green spaces, the underlying neural mechanisms through which architectural waterscapes—often referred to as “blue spaces”—affect human stress recovery remain insufficiently explored. Water, characterized by its rhythmic flow and multisensory qualities, has the unique potential to influence perception, cognition, and emotional processing. Therefore, this study aims to analyze, from a cognitive neuroscience perspective, how waterscapes affect brain activity, the endocrine system, and emotional regulation. It seeks to establish a theoretical foundation for restorative spatial design that promotes both physiological and psychological well-being in urban environments. (Method) This research focuses on artificial waterscapes within architectural settings, including fountains, ponds, and other designed water features, to examine how their visual and auditory properties contribute to neural regulation during stress recovery. The study employs an interdisciplinary literature analysis that synthesizes theoretical frameworks from architectural acoustics, environmental psychology, and cognitive neuroscience. It proposes a conceptual model to explain how the sensory characteristics of water interact with the brain’s perceptual and emotional systems, forming a restorative mechanism that mediates the relationship between environmental stimuli and neural responses. (Results) These findings suggest that architectural waterscapes promote stress recovery through multiple interrelated neural pathways. Low-frequency and rhythmically patterned water sounds help regulate the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, reduce physiological tension, and restore autonomic balance. Simultaneously, the visual regularity and rhythmic motion of water surfaces enhance perceptual fluency and reduce cognitive load, allowing attentional resources to recover. Furthermore, the positive symbolic meanings associated with water—such as purity, calmness, and continuity—activate the reward and emotional memory systems of the brain and increase feelings of comfort, safety, and happiness. However, the results also indicate that the restorative effects of waterscapes are not unconditionally positive; excessive acoustic intensity, chaotic visual patterns, or a lack of perceived environmental safety may trigger stress responses. These findings highlight the importance of achieving a harmonious balance between sensory stimulation and environmental context in restorative design. (Conclusions) As a multisensory environmental design element, architectural waterscapes have significant potential to promote neural regulation and facilitate stress recovery. By modulating the HPA axis, strengthening visual fluency, and activating emotional reward circuits, they contribute to the integration of physiological relaxation and psychological healing. This study emphasizes that the restorative impact of waterscapes is dual in nature, capable of producing both positive and negative effects depending on contextual and perceptual factors. Accordingly, future design practices should adopt an integrative approach that harmonizes the acoustic, visual, and cultural dimensions. Such interdisciplinary design strategies can optimize restorative spatial experiences and provide a scientific basis for creating healthier and more emotionally balanced urban environments.
