Abstract

(Background and Purpose) In modern society, solutions for resource replacement and resilience of cyclical functions in urban resources are being sought for resource depletion and sustainability. The study of resilience, considering the causal relationship to the person who is experiencing it, is emerging. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to improve the applicability of resilience through the medium of public spaces to provide a space for relaxation, which is currently in high social demand to increase the sensibility of resilience. In addition, a public space is presented that reduces the vulnerability of the city and enhances the conversion ability by confirming the interaction as a recovery function and a resilience-inducing effect through the natural elemental characteristics of the biophilic design characteristics. (Method) The flow of this study is first, through theoretical considerations, the “recovery environment” is established from the perspective of resilience, and the interaction between the biophilic public space and resilience is a criterion for case analysis. Second, the biophilic design characteristics of public spaces are classified from the resilience point of view through a case study, and the relationship is verified by classifying the elements that interact at the time of interaction based on environmental psychology theory in a resilient city framework. This is evidence that the city and humans interact with each other through public spaces, increasing the resilience of the city, and maintaining a sustainable recovery function. (Results) By diagnosing the vulnerability of the city, biophilic design characteristics acting as resilience functions were extracted through examples of public spaces with conversion ability through biophilic grafting. Visual factors formed from direct and indirect experiences occupied a high proportion as a recovery function factor that continuously induces human behavior rather than fragmentary landscape aspects. In public space, it was confirmed that the resilience function operates in both intangible and tangible forms. (Conclusions) Resilience function acts as both an intangible and tangible form as the basis of the urban spatial structure through biophilic design and resilience interactions in the public space, and derives the resilience function according to the size and shape of the urban space. To place each public space in the right place in the city, it is intended to be used as a basic design data for biophilic public spaces, which improves accessibility and a sensibility of resilience by verifying the role and design of resilience public spaces beset by urban vulnerability.
