Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The visual center of gravity (CoG) of building facades has become an important tool for creating character and tension. Traditional architecture uses symmetry and proportion to express stability and safety, whereas modern and postmodern design introduce asymmetry, cantilevers, and offsets to create dynamism, reflecting a shift from“static equilibrium”to“dynamic order.”CoG displacement therefore becomes a key strategy for expressing freedom and innovation. Yet excessive offset can weaken perceived stability, revealing the tension between stability and novelty. This study proposes a dual-path design model—stability and novelty—to explain how CoG displacement influences aesthetic judgment and to offer a framework for balanced visual strategies in facade and form design. (Method) Adopting a design-led perspective, the study integrates architectural design with aesthetics and cognitive science, using four methods: literature analysis, case studies, perception-based questionnaire validation, and inductive synthesis. A systematic review of architectural aesthetics and visual/cognitive psychology informs the construction of the dual-path framework. Representative contemporary projects are selected to compare different CoG displacement strategies along the stability–novelty dimension. Questionnaire ratings examine changes in perceived stability, novelty, and overall preference. On this basis, the study proposes the concept of a“dynamic balance band (legible instability)”and summarizes practical design strategies. The research focuses on visual perception of building exteriors/facades and the linkage among form, emotion, and aesthetic response. Future work will incorporate neuroaesthetics and user-behavior data to strengthen mechanistic evidence and external validity. (Results) Preferences exhibit an inverted-U pattern: moderate displacement (≈15%–25%) achieves the best balance between stability and novelty and yields the highest preference. Displacement types are orderly positioned along the stability–novelty continuum: vertical displacements read as more stable, lateral displacements as intermediate, and diagonal displacements as the most novel. Supporting cues (plinths, colonnades, shadows) and material characteristics (stone, glass) modulate perceived stability and visual salience. Cultural context further shifts tolerance and aesthetic thresholds: order-oriented cultures favor lower displacement, whereas innovation-oriented cultures accept stronger displacement. (Conclusions) The dual-path model reveals the aesthetic mechanism of CoG displacement: the stability path provides order and a sense of safety, while the novelty path induces emotional arousal; aesthetic experience is determined by their dynamic balance. Accordingly, the study proposes a design process: set a target displacement range (15%–25%); specify the semantic type/direction of displacement; adjust supporting cues and material properties; and refine with respect to cultural context. Future work will use eye-tracking and neuroimaging to further validate mechanisms and develop perception-based parametric tools, advancing architectural design from experience-driven to evidence-driven practice.
